Oluebube Chukwu Graces Night Of Tribute For Late Pioneer Abia Labour Commissioner

A solemn night of reflection and tribute was held in Umuahia on Tuesday, 13th May, 2025, as dignitaries gathered to honour the memory of Comrade Sunny Onwuma, the late Commissioner for Labour and Productivity in Abia State. The event, convened by Governor Alex Otti, brought together top government officials, political associates, friends and family members of the late Pioneer Hon. Commissioner for Labour & Productivity, Abia State. 



Among notable attendees was Dr. Oluebube A. Chukwu, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Abia State on Due Process & Head, Abia State Due Process & Public Procurement Bureau, who joined other members of the Abia State Executive Council in paying respects to the departed commissioner. Chukwu, known for his commitment to workers' welfare, described Onwuma as a “dedicated public servant whose legacy of diligence and integrity will endure.”

Held at the JAAC Building Auditorium in Umuahia, the Night of Tribute was marked by solemn music, speeches, and moments of silence. The hall was filled to capacity as colleagues and friends recounted personal memories and celebrated the life and impact of the late Sunny Onwuma.


In his message, Governor Otti expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Onwuma as “a tireless advocate for labour rights, a productive giant” who left an indelible mark on Abia’s civil service reforms. He called on all present to emulate the selfless service demonstrated by the late commissioner.

Dr. Chukwu also used the occasion to urge continued dedication among public servants, stating that “our greatest tribute to Comrade Sunny is to carry forward the values he stood for including honesty, fairness, and service to the people.”

Other speakers at the event included commissioners, other appointees of Governor Otti, staff of the Ministry of Labour and Productivity, family members and friends who praised Onwuma’s leadership and humane approach to governance. Many noted that his calm demeanour and commitment to workers’ issues earned him respect across party lines.

A highlight of the evening was the symbolic lighting of candles in his honour, followed by a brief documentary capturing the milestones of Onwuma’s career and contributions to the state.

The night closed with prayers for his family and an assurance of support for the family he left behind.
