Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has on 2nd May 2025, inaugurated the Main and Local Organizing Committees for the 1st Abia State Para Badminton International Tournament and the All African Para Badminton Championship, scheduled to take place in Umuahia from September 30 to October 16, 2025.

The event marks a significant breakthrough in Abia’s sports development agenda, signaling the state’s preparedness to host a major international para-sporting tournament. Representing the Governor at the inauguration was his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, FNSE, who also serves as Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee (MOC).
In his address, Emetu lauded the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) for its unrelenting efforts to promote the sport nationwide. He described badminton as not only a graceful and fast-paced game but also a powerful avenue for youth engagement and community development. “Behind every shuttle and serve is a network of passionate individuals who are building more than just athletes they’re building confidence, discipline, and hope,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), the Governor’s wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Ngozi Felix reaffirmed her support for the event and encouraged female athletes to rise to the occasion and compete with pride.
Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, highlighted Governor Otti’s unwavering commitment to repositioning Abia as a sporting powerhouse, noting the sponsorship of over seven international sporting events since the administration took office.
Also present at the event were top government officials including Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, Ph.D; Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Development, Comrade Onyebuchi Chukwu; and Special Adviser on Due Process, Dr. Oluebube A. Chukwu.
In his remarks, Dr. Chukwu praised Governor Otti for his visionary leadership and commitment to inclusive development. He noted that the tournament exemplifies the administration’s broader goal of building systems that work for sports, governance, and public trust.
“This is not just a sports event it’s a reflection of Governor Otti’s belief that governance must touch lives, create opportunities, and uplift the human spirit,” Dr. Chukwu said. “Para badminton is about excellence in the face of adversity. It’s about dignity, representation, and community. And it takes a governor like Dr. Alex Otti to see the value in that and invest in it.”
Dr. Chukwu concluded by assuring stakeholders that under Governor Otti’s leadership, Abia State will continue to stand out as a beacon of good governance, discipline, and purpose-driven progress.
