Refugees Deserve Dignity, Belonging, Says Oluebube Chukwu On World Refugee Day

Dr. Oluebube A. Chukwu, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Alex Otti on Due Process, has reaffirmed the Abia State Government’s commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of refugees and displaced persons, describing inclusion and empathy as pillars of the present administration.

Speaking with newsmen in his office at Government House, Umuahia, during the commemoration of the 2025 World Refugee Day, Dr. Chukwu said the Alex Otti-led government is working to ensure that all persons in Abia, regardless of their background or status, are treated with fairness and compassion.

He stated that the growing number of displaced persons across the country, driven by conflict and instability, demands urgent and sustained action by all levels of government. “Refugees are not statistics they are people with dreams, talents, and rights. We in Abia believe in creating an environment where everyone can thrive,” he said.

Dr. Chukwu disclosed that the state government, under the pragmatic leadership of His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti, in partnership with humanitarian agencies, has commenced new efforts aimed at identifying displaced individuals especially women and youths and integrating them into ongoing empowerment and social support programmes.

Reflecting on the global theme of this year’s observance, “For a World Where Refugees Are Welcomed”, Dr. Chukwu called on citizens to show empathy and take collective action to protect the dignity and rights of all. “This is not just about policy it is about humanity. We must open our hearts and structures to those in need,” he said.

According to him, Governor Otti’s administration sees public service as a tool for healing and inclusion. “We are intentionally designing programmes that bring everyone on board, because progress means nothing if it leaves people behind,” he noted.

He urged Abians to embrace the spirit of the day by standing up for the vulnerable and advocating for policies that reflect justice and humanity. “This government will continue to champion due process and fairness in every area, ensuring that no one is invisible or forgotten,” Chukwu assured.
