The 2025 Oluebube A. Chukwu Amuda Unity Cup football tournament ended on Monday, January 6, 2026, with Umuogele emerging champions after days of keenly contested matches that brought together youths from various communities in Amuda Town, Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State.
The grassroots competition, which kicked off on December 30, 2025, was held at the Peace Comprehensive Secondary School field, Amuda, and attracted large crowds throughout the festive period. Four communities; Umumeze, Umuogele, Umucha and Umuehihie, participated in the tournament, which was organised to promote unity, sportsmanship and youth development.
At the end of the competition, Umuogele finished top of the standings to lift the Unity Cup, while Umuehihie secured second place. Umucha placed third, with Umumeze finishing at the bottom of the table.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Oluebube A. Chukwu, who sponsored the tournament, was represented at the grand finale by Dr. Ifeanyi Ihegazie. He commended the participating teams for their discipline, commitment and competitive spirit.
Dr. Chukwu noted that the Unity Cup was organised to promote team spirit and peaceful coexistence among youths in the area, provide entertainment during the festive season and create a platform for discovering football talents.
He revealed that several football coaches and scouts were in attendance during the competition with a view to identifying outstanding players for possible opportunities in the Nigerian Professional Football League in the coming season.
The organisers expressed optimism that some of the players showcased during the tournament would soon progress to higher levels of the game, adding that the success of the competition underscores the importance of grassroots sports in youth empowerment and community development.
The Amuda Unity Cup ended on a high note, with residents calling for the tournament to be sustained and expanded in future editions to further strengthen unity and promote sporting excellence in the area.
