On November 7, 2024, Dr. Oluebube A. Chukwu, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Abia State on Due Process and Head, Abia State Due Process and Public Procurement Bureau joined dignitaries and Abians at an inter-denominational commendation service held in honour of the late Dr. Ogbonnaya Christopher Onu, CON, the first civilian Governor of Abia State and former Minister of science, technology and innovation of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The gathering served as a moving tribute to Dr. Onu’s enduring legacy of integrity, vision, and commitment to public service.
Reflecting on Dr. Onu’s life, Dr. Chukwu observed, “After one’s passing, it is their deeds that live on.” He remarked that the diverse attendance at the service, representing all walks of life, was a true reflection of Dr. Onu’s impact on people, rooted in character and service rather than position. He cited Proverbs 22:1, reminding those gathered that “a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches.”
In honouring Dr. Onu’s memory, Dr. Chukwu encouraged all present to embody his principles of selfless leadership and visionary service. He emphasized that late Dr. Onu’s life serves as a clarion call for us all to prioritize integrity, compassion, and dedication to the betterment of society.
He concluded by noting that while the state mourns the loss of an icon, Dr. Onu’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations. “We are all sojourners, passing through,” he reminded, “and it is our duty to leave a lasting legacy of excellence that will serve as a monument for those to come.”
