Senior Special Assistant to Governor Alex Otti on Due Process, Dr. Oluebube A. Chukwu, has commended the Abia State Governor for signing the Abia State Mini-Grid Regulation, describing it as a bold step towards addressing power challenges in the state.Governor Otti, on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, signed the regulatory framework which formally opens up the Abia State Electricity Market to investors. The move is expected to boost generation and distribution, particularly in unserved and underserved communities across the state.Chukwu hailed the initiative, noting that it aligns with the governor’s broader reforms to reposition Abia on the path of sustainable development. He said the regulation would not only attract private sector participation but also guarantee reliable power supply to homes and industries. It will be recalled that in June, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved the transfer of regulatory oversight of Abia’s electricity market to the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority (ASERA).The commission explained that the transfer was in compliance with the amended 1999 Constitution and the Electricity Act 2023, which empowers states to regulate electricity within their territories once certain conditions are met.As part of the transition process, NERC directed the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to establish a subsidiary, EEDC SubCo, to manage intrastate electricity supply and distribution in Abia. The arrangement is to be completed by December 24, 2025, while NERC will retain oversight on interstate and international electricity operations. The development is widely seen as a game-changer for Abia, with stakeholders expressing optimism that the framework will drive investments, improve service delivery, and strengthen the state’s economic base.www.oluebubechukwu.com
