The Head, Due Process and Public Procurement Bureau in Abia State, Dr. Oluebube Chukwu, has applauded the state government’s newly launched electric bus transportation system, describing it as “eco-friendly, people-focused, and a landmark achievement” in Nigeria’s public transport sector.

Speaking to journalists at the launch in Umuahia on Monday, 22nd December 2025, Dr. Chukwu said the project reflects Governor Alex Otti’s commitment to transparent governance, value for money, and sustainable development. He noted that the initiative is among the first of its kind in the country and aligns environmental responsibility with improved mobility for residents.
Dr. Chukwu also called on Abians to maximize the use of the electric buses and sustain their support for Governor Otti, stressing that the state has not witnessed such innovative and people-centered initiatives in recent years. He added that continued public backing would ensure the project’s success and pave the way for further expansion of green transport services in Abia.

The electric vehicle transport system, launched by Governor Otti, marks a significant milestone in the state’s drive toward clean energy and modern infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, commended the Abia State Government for embracing innovation and sustainability. She described the electric shuttle project as forward-looking and aligned with global efforts to combat climate change. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala added that Abia is setting an example for other sub-national governments in Nigeria, noting that investments in green transportation enhance urban living, attract investors, and foster long-term economic growth.
Governor Otti, in his remarks, explained that Abia’s journey toward sustainable transport began with the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses before transitioning to fully electric vehicles. He emphasized that the new buses are inclusive, with special features for persons with disabilities, including easy access and designated seating.

To ensure smooth operations, the Governor announced plans to establish charging stations at strategic locations, including Umuahia and Aba. He further revealed that the electric shuttle services would be free for residents until January, encouraging citizens to take advantage of the initiative responsibly. Chinese technical experts will also be on hand throughout the year to provide maintenance and technical support.
The electric buses, supplied through a partnership with the Coscharis Group, form part of Abia State’s broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions, lower transportation costs, and improve residents’ quality of life.
