Oluebube Chukwu: 'Abia Is Poised To Lead Africa In Inclusive Sports Hosting'

The 5th edition of the Abia State National Para-Badminton Open Championship ended on a high note on Thursday 17th July, 2025, with an inspiring closing ceremony held at the International Conference Center, Umuahia, drawing participants, sports enthusiasts, and top government officials from across the country.



Briefing newsmen after the closing ceremony, Dr. Oluebube Chukwu, the Senior Special Assistant to the Abia State Governor on Due Process, emphasized that the consistent hosting of the championship is a clear demonstration of Abia State’s dedication to promoting inclusivity, talent, and sporting excellence.



Dr. Chukwu highlighted that the tournament, now in its fifth edition, has grown in reputation and impact, making Abia a key destination for national sports events. “This is more than just a tournament. It is a signal that Abia is ready to take its place on the continental and global sports stage,” he declared.

He went further to state that Abia State is preparing to host the African Para-Badminton Championships come October 2025, expressing strong confidence that the state’s available world-class facilities, experienced organizing teams, and supportive leadership under Governor Alex Otti will ensure a historic event.



“This administration led by Dr. Alex Chioma Otti is intentional about building not just physical infrastructure but inclusive systems where every athlete, abled or disabled  has equal opportunity to shine,” Dr. Chukwu noted. He applauded the dedication of para-athletes who continue to break barriers and represent resilience, excellence, and unity.

Dr. Oluebube Chukwu, an avid and decorated badminton player himself, also emphasized the role of sports in economic development and youth empowerment, pointing out that hosting such international events will not only spotlight Abia globally but will also boost tourism, hospitality, and local enterprise.


In a goodwill message, Governor Otti, represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, reaffirmed the state government’s unwavering commitment to creating inclusive sporting platforms. He emphasized that sports remain a critical priority, with the power to transform lives, build community bonds, and inspire generations.

The closing ceremony was crowned with a star match featuring top para-badminton players from across Nigeria. Other dignitaries in attendance included the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sir Uzor Nwachukwu, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Poverty Alleviation and Vulnerable Groups, Mrs. Ifeoma Thomas, Sports Commissioner Nwaobilor Ananaba and several national and state officials from the Para-Badminton Association.

With the successful conclusion of the 5th edition, Abia State continues to lead by example in the promotion of inclusive sports and national unity.
