Gov Alex Otti’s past 365 Days in Office: Transforming Abia State's Economic Landscape

Abia State has experienced a transformative year under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti. His administration, which began with a promise of economic rejuvenation and inclusive development, has delivered on multiple fronts. With strategic initiatives spanning infrastructure, agriculture, education, healthcare, and energy, the state has laid a solid foundation for sustainable growth.

Infrastructure development has been at the core of Governor Otti’s agenda. Over the past year, the administration launched numerous road and bridge projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic activity. Notable road projects include the reconstruction of the Enyimba Economic City Access Road, the dualization of Ossa Road, Umuahia-Uzoakoli Road, and the rehabilitation of Ntigha-Mbawsi-Umuala Road, Aba-Port Harcourt Road, Ohafia-Arochukwu Road etc. The zero pothole initiative have really paid off as Umuahia city roads now wears new look. Investments totaling several billions of Naira and have significantly improved travel efficiency, reducing travel time by 30% and increasing trade volumes by 25%. The Abia airport project at Ubahu Nsulu, this project when completed will also facilitate the seamless movement of goods and people within and beyond the state, bringing industrialization to the host commmunities.

The agricultural sector, a vital part of Abia’s economy, has also seen remarkable progress. The launch of the Agricultural Support Scheme has bolstered food security and enhanced farmers' incomes. Maize production alone increased by 25%, rising from 1.2 million metric tons in 2023 to more than 1.5 million metric tons in 2024. Investments in rural infrastructure, including irrigation systems and storage facilities, have further strengthened the sector, empowering local farmers and boosting productivity.

In education, Governor Otti’s administration has taken strides to revitalize infrastructure and expand access. With an investment of billions of Naira, the state constructed more than 500 new classrooms and rehabilitated over 200 existing ones. Enrollment rates have risen by 15%, with 85% of children now attending primary school. Vocational training programs have also been introduced, equipping youths with the skills necessary for a modern economy and fostering a culture of innovation.

Healthcare has seen substantial improvements as well. The administration has upgraded hospitals and primary healthcare centers, investing huge in healthcare infrastructure. This has led to a 12% decrease in infant mortality and a 10% drop in maternal mortality rates. More than twenty new healthcare facilities have been constructed, while over 200 existing centers were rehabilitated, improving access for vulnerable populations, especially in rural areas.

Abia’s economy has shown promising signs of growth, with over 10% increase in GDP and less than 8% reduction in poverty rates. The administration’s initiatives to promote entrepreneurship, innovation, and investment have attracted billions of Naira in investments and created over 10,000 jobs. These achievements highlights the state’s potential as a hub for economic opportunity and its readiness to compete on a global scale.

The manufacturing sector, particularly in Aba, has been a key focus area. With a massive investment in the Aba Industrial Development Project, the number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) has grown by more than 20%. The sector’s overall growth of more than 20% is a accentuated to the administration’s commitment to supporting local industries and entrepreneurship. Key projects, such as the Aba Industrial Cluster Revitalization Program, have enhanced access to finance, power and modern infrastructure for businesses. Commissioning of renovated and retrofitted Nnamdi Azikiwe Secretariat has also brought modernity to civil servants who now work in conducive working environment and 21st Century facilities and equipments. Bringing succor to workers and their families by implementing the new minimum wage in the State.

Energy reforms have also been a significant part of Governor Otti’s agenda. By promoting renewable energy sources and upgrading existing infrastructure, the state has increased access to electricity by more than 15% and reduced energy consumption by less than 10%. Investment of billion of Naira in solar power have added 50 MW to the state’s energy grid, ensuring more reliable supply for households and businesses while promoting environmental sustainability.

Governor Otti once again demonstrated his commitment to supporting sports development in Abia State by fulfilling his promise of donating a brand new 32 seaters Coaster Bus to Abia Warriors. Rains cash bonuses to its coaches and players for their Confederation Cup feat, restoring their home ground games at Umuahia Township Stadium. Enyimba, Abia Comet and Abia Angels were not left behind as he breathed a new life in them. Cash rewards were given to victorious Abia Para Olympians who did the state proud during the 2024 Paris Para Olympic games. Hosting maiden edition and other various sporting events in the State.

These achievements are a reflection of Governor Otti’s commitment to fulfilling his electoral promises and enhancing the security of lives and properties of Abians. Introduction of operation 'Crush' a security outfit with collaboration of other security agents has improve the security Abia greatly, with a major success recorded in Umunneochi LGA, that used to be a haven for criminal elements before inception of his administration.
His administration’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and community engagement has fostered trust among citizens and stakeholders alike.

Despite these successes, challenges remain. Governor Otti acknowledges the need for sustained efforts to address unemployment, improve healthcare access in remote areas, and modernize the education sector further. His administration has vowed to tackle these issues head-on in the coming years.

One of the most notable moments of the year was the Supreme Court’s reaffirmation of Governor Otti’s electoral victory on January 12, 2024. This legal victory provided a renewed mandate for his administration to continue its transformative work, bolstering public confidence in his leadership.

Looking ahead, the administration plans to deepen its focus on industrialization, leveraging Abia’s strategic location and skilled workforce to attract global investments. Efforts to expand renewable energy, improve rural access, and modernize agriculture are also on the horizon.

The past year has been a period of significant progress for Abia State. Under Governor Alex Otti’s leadership, the state has demonstrated that with visionary policies and inclusive governance, meaningful development is achievable.

As Abia continues its journey of transformation, the foundation laid in the past year provides a solid platform for sustainable growth. Citizens and stakeholders alike are optimistic that the state’s best days lie ahead.
