Author: By Oluebube A. Chukwu

Sports loving Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has transformed sports development in the state, announcing employment for 15 athletes who brought glory to Abia through their victories in national and international sporting competitions. This bold move aims to secure the future of the athletes while positioning the state as a hub of sports excellence.

Speaking at a grand reception in his Nvosi country home, Isiala Ngwa South LGA, Otti lauded the athletes for their dedication and successes at events such as the Paralympics in Paris, the para badminton competition in Uganda, and the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State. The Governor described the gathering as one of his proudest moments, reaffirming his commitment to uplifting Abia’s sports talent and infrastructure.

In addition to providing jobs, Otti approved critical requests from the Abia State Sports Council, including the provision of an operational coaster bus, an official vehicle for the Director of Sports, and significant upgrades to the Umuahia Township stadium. These measures, he said, will enhance the council’s ability to nurture and retain talent, ensuring athletes stay within the state rather than seeking opportunities elsewhere.

Beyond the job offers, Otti announced a staggering N75 million in cash rewards, with N20 million allocated to Paralympic champions Onyinyechi Gift Mark and Esther Nworgu. A further N33 million was shared among other athletes, and N22 million rewarded the coaching crew for their efforts in leading the athletes to success. He emphasized that his administration is erasing the non-indigene distinction, affirming that all residents of Abia, regardless of origin, are considered Abians.

Governor Otti also took the opportunity to acknowledge former Super Eagles coach Christian Chukwu, promising to support his health and ensure he receives the best possible medical care. Otti noted that a society that forgets its heroes is destined for failure, pledging that his government will remember and honor those who have contributed to the state’s sporting legacy.

In his address, Sports and Youth Development Commissioner, Mr. Nwaobilor Ananaba, praised the governor’s unparalleled commitment to sports, highlighting the strategic investments made in infrastructure and athlete development. Ananaba noted that these efforts have raised Abia’s status as a leader in sports, attracting national recognition and driving unprecedented success at international competitions.

As the state looks toward the future, the Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George, stressed that these achievements are just the beginning. With enhanced resources, renewed focus on grassroots development, and strategic leadership under Governor Otti, he predicted that Abia will soon become a national force in sports, outshining competitors and fostering a new generation of champions. The recent successes, he said, have already put Abia on the path to unparalleled greatness.

Comrade Obioma, in his continued remarks, expressed immense gratitude for the unprecedented support from Governor Otti, describing it as the spark that reignited hope in Abia's sports sector. He recalled the dismal state of sports development in the past, where athletes struggled without adequate resources or motivation. Now, under Otti’s administration, the athletes are not only well-equipped but also feel valued and supported, which has significantly boosted their performance and morale.

Looking ahead, George urged the governor to further solidify these gains by ensuring sustained investment in the state’s sports programs. He suggested that with the right infrastructure, such as the completion of new training facilities and the recruitment of more top-tier coaches, Abia could host major national and international sporting events in the near future. This, he added, would not only elevate the state’s reputation but also contribute to the economic growth of Abia, positioning it as a beacon of sports excellence in Nigeria and beyond.

Governor Otti’s comprehensive approach to sports is viewed as a strategic pillar in his broader vision for youth empowerment and development in Abia State. By creating job opportunities, improving sports facilities, and ensuring a nurturing environment for athletes, Otti has positioned sports as a vital avenue for both individual and collective progress in the state. His leadership is already being hailed as transformative, with many believing it will leave a lasting legacy in the realm of Nigerian sports.
