Inspiring address at the South East Zonal Workshop of the National Association of Women Judges Nigeria (NAWJN) held in Umuahia, Abia State Governor Alex C. Otti emphasized the critical role of women in leadership and called for increased opportunities for women to ascend to top positions, particularly within the legal profession. Quoting Dr. Myles Munroe, Governor Otti remarked, “Whatever you give to a woman, she will receive it, multiply it, and give it back to you.” He spoke of a new era of recognizing women's unique leadership qualities and their capacity for excellence, noting the significant rise in women achieving prominent positions in both public and corporate sectors worldwide. “When trained and offered a level playing field, our women and girls are as capable of outstanding performance as their male counterparts,” he affirmed. The governor observed a growing commitment among parents and institutions to expand women’s capacities, enabling them to compete for high-ranking roles. Supporting women to reach their full potential, he explained, is not only an ethical choice but a strategic economic decision, contributing positively to various critical sectors, including science, medicine, finance, sports, and law. Welcoming Hon. Justice Kudirat M. O. Kekere-Ekun, GCON, recently appointed as the Chief Justice of Nigeria, and other distinguished attendees, Governor Otti expressed pride in hosting this important workshop in Umuahia. He highlighted Abia State's progressive approach to gender equality in leadership, acknowledging that many key positions in sectors like education, healthcare, civil service, and financial management are led by highly capable women. The historical legacy of strong women in Abia, from the Aba Women’s Uprising of 1929 to the resourcefulness of today’s female leaders, Otti noted, has fostered a culture where women are recognized as critical stakeholders in governance. Abia women, he explained, have consistently demonstrated commitment and resilience in every sphere, from business and market hubs to urban offices and rural farms. Addressing the theme, "Breaking Leadership Barriers for Women in the Legal Profession," Governor Otti encouraged participants to identify ways to support women in overcoming obstacles in their career advancement. He called for clear policies that promote a fair environment where qualified women can aspire to reach the highest levels of their profession, including the judiciary’s most esteemed roles. Governor Otti emphasized the importance of competence as a standard in legal leadership, urging that qualifications and expertise must take precedence over any other criteria. He warned against politicizing the legal profession, advocating for a system that maintains high ethical standards and remains true to justice and excellence. Looking to the future, Governor Otti urged attendees to focus on building a system that encourages young women to dream and pursue leadership within the legal field. He shared his vision of a legal profession enriched by more women leaders, whose empathy and meticulousness strengthen adherence to the law. Governor Otti expressed Abia State's commitment to support initiatives that empower women. "The world will be better when women are supported, empowered, and given the platform to do exploits," he stated, pledging to collaborate with NAWJN to advance this important cause across the region.
